How to Format Your Paper in AMA [2022 Complete Guide]

AMA stands for American Medical Association and is used in most medical and scientific papers. We will be addressing the formatting guidelines applied on the Title Page, Body paragraphs, In-text citations, and the Reference List.

Title Page


If the assignment requires a title page document the following in this order:


• Title of document
• Your Name
• Your Instructor’s Name
• Course Title
• Date

Remember you should center this information. Insert the title of the document in the running head and place it on the left and insert the page number on the right. Note that you should have three to four spaces before writing the title document.

Body

Use section headings to organize the content.


• Headings should be bold and aligned to the left
• Italicize the subheadings
• Indent the first line to each paragraph ½ inch
• Do not put an extra line between the paragraphs and the headings

To indent the first line of the paragraph right-click the beginning of the first line of the paragraph on the dialog box click paragraph on the indentation section go to the special section and click the first-line option. You can also click the tab button to indent the first line.

It is always important to refer to the assignment guidelines as at times they depend on your instructor. Nonetheless, these are the recommended formatting guidelines.


• Margins: Use One inch margins
• Line Spacing: Double-space the main text (single space only within the abstract, notes, titles and headings, block quotes, tables and figures, and references—everything but the main text)
• Font: Use Times New Roman, 12-point font
• Indents: Half-inch indents are standard (use the “tab” button) for new paragraphs
• Page Numbers: Place page numbers in the top right-hand corner throughout (starting with the title page)
• Page Headers: Put the title of your document in the top left-hand corner of the page

In-text Citations

In-text citations are the brief form of references included in the body of your work. First, let us take a look at the instances you are supposed to cite.


• When using direct quotation even one that is in quotation marks
• Use facts
• Paraphrase an author’s ideas
• Use keywords or phrases from an author
• Mention the author’s name
• When you’ve made a reference to another author’s ideas


In AMA the in-text citations are in the superscript form e.g. Esquire1. To insert a number in the superscript form click on ctrl, shift, and the plus sign. Alternatively, you can click the x2 and transform the number into the superscript form. The numbers should be similar to those in the reference list. If the in-text citation is number 1 then it should be number 1 on the reference list.


Reference List


The list should be numbered and each reference should correlate to the in-text citation. The Title Reference should be in bold.

AMA is similar to the Vancouver style. This may be helpful for those who source their references from Google Scholar.

Authors & Editors:
• The Last name then first and middle initials (e.g., Porter CL)
• Seven or more authors, list the first three authors, then put “et al” (e.g., Smith RL, Brown CB, Williams AZ, et al.)
• If the author(s) represent a group, add the group name after the authors (e.g., Almond D, Currie J, Herrmann M, National Bureau of Economic Research.)

Article Titles:
• Titles of articles, chapters, web pages, and entries in reference works are set in sentence caps Without quotation marks or italics

Book Titles:
• Titles of books, volumes, reference works, reports & bulletins, theses & dissertations are formatted in heading caps
• Set in italics e.g., Migraine: Manifestations, Pathogenesis, and Management.
City, State:
• Include the 2-letter abbreviation for the state with all US cities and Canadian provinces (e.g., Roanoke, VA:)

• Add the country with all other cities (e.g., Paris, France:)

• Do not list the state if it is part of the publisher’s name

URL:
• Always use the link to the reference that will take the reader directly to the source

• Do not shorten the link, but use the entire string (e.g., http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM187501070920102. Not http://www.nejm.org)
